ABSTRACT

328,344. Naylor, W. E. Feb. 4, 1929. Charging. - A charging machine, particularly for zinc retorts, comprises a carriage A carrying a rotary projector G mounted on the end of an arm E which is pivoted so that it may be swung in a vertical plane to bring the projector into register with any one of a tier of retorts x<2>. The carriage A is fitted with a storage hopper B from which the charge is delivered by an endless conveyer 0 to an elevator D, the casing d<1> of the latter being formed with a spout d<11> through which the material falls into a small hopper f<4> for delivery to the projector G by an endless band F. The hopper f<4>, band F, and projector G form a unitary structure with the arm E which carries, at the end opposite the projector, a gear casing c<2> and an electric motor e<3>, the latter being bolted to a bracket e<4> carried by a shaft c<5> which is journaled in bearings e<6> on the elevator casing d<1>. The motor e<3> drives the projector through a shaft enclosed in the arm E and the conveyer band F through gearing f<7>, f<8>, f<9>. The projector is raised and lowered by a cable e<10>, Fig. 2, which is wound on a drum e<14> operated by a crank e<15>. An electric motor H is mounted on one end of the carriage frame and furnishes the drive for the carriage itself, the conveyer C, and the elevator D. The motor shaft h<1> is connected through transmission gearing K to a shaft k<2> on which are mounted two oppositely-coned pulleys k', k<8> one or other of which is adapted to be brought into engagement with a friction pulley k<9> connected by chain gearing to the axle a<3> of one pair of the carriage wheels a<5>. In order that the carriage may be brought to rest or its direction of travel reversed, the shaft k<2>, with the pulleys k<7>, k<8>, is longitudinally movable by means of a lever N, Fig. 1, which is connected through links n<4>, n<5>,n<6> to a collar n<1> on the end of the shaft k<2>. The elevator D is driven by a sprocket d<5>, Fig. 3, mounted on a shaft d<8> and connected by a chain l<6> to a shaft l<3> on which is loosely mounted a pinion l<2> meshing with a pinion l<1> on the shaft k<2>. A clutch member o<9> splined to the shaft l<3> is adapted, when moved, by operation of the hand-lever 0, into engagement with the pinion l<2> to lock the latter to the shaft and so effect operation of the conveyer C and elevator D. The movement of the shaft l<3> is transmitted, through an eccentric m<1>, links m<4>, and pawl and ratchet mechanism m<7>, m<8>, to a spindle c<5>, Fig. 6, which carries the drive-sprocket for the conveyer C.
